How I Travel: Ariel Grant is always on the go

,
Most people we’ll tell you not to wear an “I heart NY” in the middle of NYC, but honestly it’s my favorite design.

I know, such a corny title. But I lived the series on Condé Nast Traveler so I thought I do my own spin. I gathered my favorite questions from their interviews and well… interviewed myself.

Beach or city?

City everytime. I honestly despise sand and I find the beach kind of boring. In a city, there’s always so much to do and see. It’s always so exciting and I never worry about finding things to do.

How early she arrives to the airport:

Before I had TSA Precheck, it was always about 45 min. Now with TSA Precheck, it’s still 45 min but only because my husband likes to get there an hour before so this is our compromise. I’d probably show up 20 min before if I was traveling alone especially carry-on only.

Her go-to plane outfit:

Good Ole’ black leggings and a $5 Kohls t-shirt. They work in most seasons and usually I turn off my plane air vent so I skip wearing a sweater or jacket.

Her tips for traveling with children:

Always plan with them in mind. I’m usually a go-go-go kind of traveler but I’ve learned with my kids to plan nap times, bring snacks, and make sure I find something to entertain them. I usually avoid art museums at this age but I’ll take them to interactive museums and aquariums.

Her priority when planning a vacation:

The activities! If I could do everything in 3 days I would. But because I can’t, I try to pick my top things to do that I wouldn’t want to miss on the chance we don’t come back. I love everything from museums to adventure activities so sometimes it hard prioritizing what not to miss.

Her first memory of riding in business or first class:

While I recently just experienced my first adult trip in first class, which is a completely different experience, my first memory was when I was about 11 or 12. I can’t remember where I went, but it was when I was an unaccompanied minor and they allowed me to upgrade for some reason to first class. As a kid, it’s really not too special, they took my jacket versus me placing it by my feet and I still drank the free soda I would’ve gotten in economy. It was a short flight so no meal service but it was still cool to have a larger seat. As an adult, I found it amazing how many alcoholic drinks you could get. It was a red eye that I should’ve been sleeping on but instead I was eating dinner and on my 3rd drink at 2 am.

A place she thinks is underrated:

Utah. I feel like the coast states like Florida and California are talked about more but Utah is naturally so beautiful. Ironic because I love cities, but I feel like Utah has so much to offer from skiing in winter to the best hikes in fall and summer.

Her recommendations for folks visiting Texas:

Just avoid it in the summer, I live here and that’s what I try to do. But besides that, there’s great spots for kayaking and tubing, the best waterparks, and amazing children’s museums. Not to mention, so many amazing food spots especially barbecue.

Where she’s hoping to go next:

I have a goal to visit the 7 wonders of the world. It was perfect because all of them are in or near pretty popular tourist cities so it checks my boxes of finding a place with tons of activities. They’re also all so culturally different so I’m excited to visit all those countries.

The hotel amenity she loves:

The free bathroom amenities. Hotels have gotten financially smarter where they provide large bottles attached to the shower so when I find a hotel that does still have the sample size bottles, I get very excited.

The place she could travel to a million times and not be sick of it:

New York City. Everytime I go, it’s just amazing. I could spend a whole week at the Met alone or a whole week just trying food. I feel like it’s a new city everytime I go and they’re always opening new museums or shows.

Her travel pet peeves:

People who are rude to service workers. From the airport to the hotel, you see a lot of people who become entitled and complain about every little thing. I’m always so grateful just to be traveling in the first place and I know service workers are already exhausted dealing with so many people everyday.
